- Agenda on Supporting Sustainable Development Goal 7, Target 7.1 (updated on 15 July 2016).
More than 1.1 billion people lack access to electricity and 2.9 billion still rely on unsustainable solid biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. Around 1 billion of those without electricity and 2.2 billion depending on solid biomass live in rural areas. Communities in rural isolated areas represent, in many cases, the poorest segment of the population in developing regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. SDG 7 is a stand-alone fully dedicated goal on energy with five targets, two of which are means of implementation. Energy SDG 7, Target 7.1 calls to " By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services".
The focus of the seminar, organized by UNDESA, UNESCAP and UNOSD in cooperation with UN-Energy and SE4ALL, was to bring together representatives of governments, practitioners along with experts and multilateral, regional and national organization representatives, was to exchange knowledge on good practices on:
- Promoting dialogue among practitioners, experts, donors and policy-makers to facilitate closer cooperation on sustainable energy access
- Assessing potential integrated policy options to address energy access and to identify synergies that can be realized from the links between energy and other development factors including health, education, economic growth, gender, water and food security
- Discussing ways to apply models and best practices to allow the scaling up of the use of clean cookstoves and stand-alone renewable energy systems
- Identifying best practices and lessons learned and sharing international and country-level experiences in energy-access development
- Discussing latest developments related to renewable energy products, systems and services.
